    When I leave two blank lines before the first line and hit the carriage return key in Microsoft, the second line will also automatically leave two lines empty. Why didn't the two blank lines appear when I did the same in Evermore?

You can achieve this in Evermore by setting up the paragraph indentation. The specific operations are: Select the Paragraph option under the Format menu, and pick the ¡°Indent first line¡± under ¡°Special format¡± as per the diagram:
